Best Blanks for DTG Printing
Why Three Layer Blanks Excel for DTG Printing
Direct-to-garment printing demands blanks with high cotton content and a smooth, tight weave. Cotton fibers absorb water-based DTG inks more effectively than synthetics, producing vibrant, wash-fast prints straight off the press. Every blank in the Three Layer catalog is rated for DTG compatibility, but the five picks below deliver the best results across color vibrancy, detail retention, and production efficiency.
Top 5 Picks for DTG Printing
1003, 4.5 oz Lightweight Tee (100% Cotton)
The 1003 is the DTG standard. Its 100% cotton construction absorbs ink without pretreatment on white garments, and the lightweight 4.5 oz fabric cures quickly under a heat press. For shops running high-volume DTG, this blank delivers the most vibrant color output with the least prep work.
1005, Ringspun Cotton Tee (100% Cotton)
The 1005 uses ringspun cotton for an ultra-smooth surface that captures fine detail and photographic prints with exceptional clarity. DTG operators printing complex artwork or full-color designs will see noticeably sharper results compared to open-end cotton alternatives.
5108, 7.8 oz Premium Pullover Hoodie (80/20 Cotton-Poly)
The 80/20 blend on the 5108 keeps DTG results strong while adding durability and shape retention from the polyester component. Pretreatment is recommended on dark colorways. The 7.8 oz weight provides enough density to prevent ink bleed-through on fleece.
P280, 8.8 oz Midweight Pullover Hoodie (70/30 Cotton-Poly)
Three Layer’s best-selling hoodie works well for DTG when properly pretreated. The 70% cotton content still absorbs ink effectively, and the 30% polyester prevents excessive shrinkage after heat pressing. Ideal for branded hoodie programs that need both DTG decoration and garment longevity.
CR280, 8.8 oz Midweight Crewneck Sweatshirt (70/30 Cotton-Poly)
The seamless body on the CR280 eliminates side-seam distortion during DTG printing, giving operators a flat, uninterrupted surface for large front prints. Same 70/30 blend and pretreatment requirements as the P280, making it easy to batch crewnecks and hoodies in the same DTG run.
DTG Printing Tips for Wholesale Blanks
- 100% cotton = most vibrant results. The 1003 and 1005 deliver the richest colors with the least effort. Cotton-poly blends still produce excellent prints but require pretreatment on all colorways.
- Always pretreat dark garments. White ink adhesion depends on proper pretreatment, regardless of fabric content.
- Heat press at 330: 350°F for 35: 45 seconds to cure DTG ink fully. Under-curing causes wash fade. Over-curing can scorch lighter-weight fabrics.
- Size your platen to the garment. Hoodies and crewnecks need a larger platen or a specialized hoodie platen to keep the fabric taut during printing.
- Run a wash test on every new blank-and-ink combination before committing to a production run.
